Every birth is a gift, and through birth tissue donation, you have the opportunity to help others heal. We realize that you might have additional questions about birth tissue donation, the process and how your gift is used. Below are a few of our most commonly asked questions we receive at First Gift, and some answers.
What is birth tissue donation?
Birth tissue donation is a form of living donation that allows mothers and their babies to donate amniotic membrane and umbilical cord after birth. These tissues are then processed into grafts and used in medical treatments to heal the ocular surface, and skin wounds and burns.
How will the gift of my birth tissue donation be used?
Does birth tissue donation cost anything?
Will donation impact my birth plan?

Is birth tissue donation safe?
Is this the same as stem cell donation?
No, birth tissue donation of amniotic membrane and umbilical cord is different from stem cell donation. Birth tissue is used to promote healing in wound care, eye surgeries, and regenerative medicine, while stem cells are used for treating diseases like leukemia and immune disorders.
