POSITION PURPOSE:

This mission centered full-time position is responsible for surgical procurement of eye tissue, documentation of procedure information, evaluating, processing, and shipment of tissue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position’s duties may include any or all of the following:

  • Recover eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant and research purposes, including drawing blood samples for serological testing
  • Perform donor medical history reviews and physical assessments including ocular tissues
  • Transport eye tissue to/from Saving Sight Eye Banks laboratories
  • Prepare eye tissue and biological specimens for transport
  • Perform facility cleaning and equipment maintenance as required
  • Run miscellaneous errands, i.e. airport delivery or pick-up
  • Prepare ocular tissue for processing in the eye bank laboratory as needed
  • Accurately document donor and tissue information on reports and in eye bank database system.
  • Inventory and Stock Laboratory/tissue handling area

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been acquired is required.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

  • Medical or funeral home background preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Basic computer and phone/fax skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Requires a great amount of flexibility due to the nature of the Eye Bank’s 24-hour business.  This may include day, night, weekend, and/or holiday hours in an on-call status occasionally going beyond shift times in order to complete tasks
  • Requires occasional out of town stays for training
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record as determined Saving Sight.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel throughout service region as required.
  • Driving for extended periods or long distances required.
  • Frequent periods of intense concentration, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle mental and physical strain involved in use of printed materials and prolonged use of computer screens.
  • Ability to perform delicate manual procedures requiring high amounts of dexterity
  • Long periods of sitting and/or standing may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move more than 50 pounds.

Laboratory Technician

POSITION PURPOSE:

This mission centered position is responsible for laboratory technical aspects of eye banking, including the evaluation, processing, and shipping of ocular tissue. Performs additional laboratory functions as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accurately document donor and tissue information on reports and in eye bank database system.
  • Responsible for receipt and check-in of donated tissue.
  • Evaluate corneal tissue using slit lamp and specular microscopes and document findings accurately.
  • Process tissue for lamellar keratoplasty.
  • Perform pre- and post-processing imaging of corneas.
  • Package distributed tissue for shipment.
  • Operate ultrasonic cleaner and autoclave to clean and sterilize instruments and equipment.
  • Handle and process blood products.
  • Perform regular laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Inventory and stock laboratory/tissue handling area.
  • Participate in quality assurance and improvement processes.
  • Assist in development of standard operating procedures and validation/qualification documents.
  • Maintain current working knowledge and compliance with Saving Sight Standard Operating Procedures, EBAA Medical Standards, HIPAA, federal and state regulations.
  • Be familiar with the general aspects of eye banking from the referral through distribution, including current trends and techniques of corneal transplantation.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been acquired.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the medical or surgical field required.
  • Current status as a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician/Assistant (COT/COA) preferred.
  • Continual training and education as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited direction, and in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan work around attaining goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work with distraction and to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office, general database, and web-based applications.

Human Resources Assistant

POSITION PURPOSE:

The human resource assistant is responsible for the administrative support of day-to-day human resource operations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs HRIS data entry and personnel file maintenance.
  • Maintains high standards of confidentiality of all employee records and information.
  • Assist with talent acquisition and onboarding process to include job descriptions, job postings, interview process, background checks and onboarding.
  • Assist in administering employee benefit programs to include annual enrollment and new hire enrollment.
  • Run monthly reports and audit benefit carrier invoices.
  • Assist in administering the performance appraisal system.
  • Assist with administering worker’s compensation and safety programs.
  • Responsible for generating semi-monthly payroll file to Accounting.
  • Assist in ensuring organizational compliance with federal, multi-state, and local employment related laws and regulations. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year accredited college or university in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in Human Resources.
  • Preferred certifications: PHR/SPHR/GPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

POSITION PURPOSE:

This mission centered position aids in the coordination of providing services and/or distributing ocular tissue and products to clients worldwide while conducting follow-up reports and maintaining accurate and complete data on patients and recipients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate distribution of tissue, Vital Tears and any other services or products offered by Saving Sight both nationally and internationally.
  • Arrange necessary logistics for both national and international shipments.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and current schedules and requests (via online database, fax and phone).
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of donor, recipient and patient information.
  • Maintain and record accurate and complete donor, recipient and patient information.
  • Assist in the on-boarding of new clients and facilities as needed. Provide training to physicians and staff as required with the eye bank database.
  • Display a professional demeanor towards all clients and agencies (including but not limited to physicians, schedulers, technicians, patients) while maintaining and strengthening relationships with all external and internal partners.
  • Work in conjunction with the Business Development team to ensure both prospective and current client relationships are being maintained and developed.
  • Generate and send post-operative follow-up reports and communicate all correspondence to the Quality Assurance department.
  • Communicate with and provide distribution data to Vision Share.
  • Document accurate and current accounts, interactions, and events in the customer relations management tool. (FMYI)     

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been acquired is a plus.
  • Continual training and certification as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of one (1) year customer service, distribution, or logistics experience is required.
  • Experience in eye banking preferred
  • A basic knowledge of ophthalmology (various specialties, anatomy of the eye) preferred
  • A working knowledge of corneal anatomy, slit lamp and specular microscopy and relevant surgical procedures involving corneal and scleral transplantation are preferred.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan work around attaining goals and objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, and phone communication skills required.
  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
